Introduction

For the Search for a Star competition, the Environment Art brief was set for the artist to create a scene that featured four key assets which had to then be presented within Unreal Engine 4. Within this documentation I will give a breakdown of how I went in creation my final Environment.

I wanted to create a scene that was comforting and allowed me to focus more on learning about lighting of scenes. I decided to use an interior scene as I would have more control over the lighting compared to an exterior open scene. This choice also made it easier to stick to the environment constraints which was given to us in the brief.

I have always enjoyed creating interiors and therefor felt like it would be my stronger attribute to use. I searched many concept websites, including artstation, until I found a concept which I felt drawn to.

The initial concept was created by Bram Sels and was named Pearl’s Apartment, I was drawn to this concept due to the warm colours he used within his concept art, with this concept art he created a breakdown sheet of the interior which I was able to use to help me create the interior.

The main idea behind the concept was that Pearl’s apartment was part of the Arabian Quarters of the city, with the exterior of the building being classic and western, such as the buildings found in Chicago.

Final Thoughts:

In the end I was pretty satisfied with what I was able to accomplish in the time I did. There where some object I would have liked to spend more time on to make it look better. I also had a few small issues with the modular parts which I could improve on.

But overall this environment tough me a lot about lighting and gave me a great chance to learn more about lighting and how to use marvelous designer within environments. As most of the models weren’t to complicated I thing the biggest place for improvement in this scene would be n textures and getting them to be more accurate to actual objects and getting the smaller details within the texture.

I am happy to have taken part in the Search for a star competition and it was great fun to create overall.
